Summer Historic Spectacular One Raceway February 7th-8th
/The first meeting for Group N Touring Cars in NSW at One Raceway Goulburn February 7th-8th was very supported with a big entry list of both local and interstate cars. Making the trip up the Hume highway from Victoria were the Cortinas of Les Walmsley#99, Rodney Evens#31, Jeff Vaux#121, Michael George#63, add to that the Datsun of David Brown#73 and the easily recognized and popular FJ Holden of Philip Barrow#72 and the Mustangs of Joe Calleja#44 and William Trengrove#64. South Australia driver Stuart Barnes Cortina#122, and the mini of Luke Paterson#931 looked good all weekend and the lone Queenslander after moving from Victoria Adrian Moyle Camaro#25. NSW and the Mustangs of Brad Tilley#28, Greg Toepfer#88, Lloyd Perry#289, Peter O'Brien in an XY Ford#27, plus the Capri of Quentin Bland#33 made up the larger capacity cars. Those lovely minis are so well presented headed by Tom Tweedie#19, Chris Collett#62, Alex D'Onfrio#59, Paul Battersby#271, John Battersby#270, Brett Eggleston#51, Francis Meier#188, David Roberts#20, Nathan Stevenson#103, Hamish Bedwell#21, and David Buckley#36. The Ford Escorts of David Nokes#7 Chris Dubois#39, Volvo of Loris Mariotto#22, Cortina's John Harrison#89, John Shuttle#118, Brad Forgeard#76, rounding out the field Peter Ferguson#37. Saturday's racing was in the usual direction with a split grid of over 2 ltr and under 2 ltr cars. Firstly race one under 2 ltr over 6 laps in very hot conditions Nokes won from pole from chased hard by Tweedie, D'Onofrio, and Collett, Luke Paterson showing great speed ahead of Paul Battersby, all in mini's followed by the Cortina's of Ferguson and Forgeard, Dubios Escort, and John Shuttle making the top ten. Race one for the over 2 ltr 6 laps cars and Brad Tilley a comfortable winner from Moyle, O'Brien, Bland, Toepfer, Calleja, Parry, and Trengrove. Race two for the under 2 ltr cars 8 laps again Nokes from pole took the win from Tweedie, D'Onofrio, Collett, Paterson, Paul Battersby, all the mini's looking fast then the Datsun of David Brown pushing on form Dubois, Forgeard, and the improving Brett Eggleston. Unfortunately, a DNF for Philip Barrow and a major engine issue would see the FJ back in the trailer for the remainder of the weekend. Race two for the bigger cars 8 laps and Tilley was putting on a driving clinic after another win from Moyle, O' Brien, Parry, Bland, and the very experienced Greg Toepfer. What a difference 12 hours can make Sunday morning and cool, wet conditions and an increasing wind. this time on the Shelley circuit or reverse direction with no split grid which meant a full qualifying session was required for all cars.....and it was a very wet one. Onto the racing and what a great site the 12-lap race three handicap was run in now drying conditions. The cars were sent off at timed intervals. Nonstop action wherever you looked on track. Surprise winner and well dissevered Hamish Bedwell in his mini from Brad Tilley who gave most of the field almost a lap head start then Parry again after starting well back Rod Evens got to forth fifth John Harrison both in Cortina's Calleja in a Mustang, D'Onofrio, Tweedie, Stevenson, minis, the Ferguson another Cortina. The afternoon seen another two races for Group N again no split grid. Race four and Brad Tilley seen the checkers first from Moyle, Parry, D'Onofrio who had been quick all meeting, Tom Tweedie with a clever steady drive, Bland was next showing speed in the Capri, Paul Battersby driving the wheels off the yellow brick, Toepfer next from Bedwell and Chris Collett driving very well. Last race for the weekend and a few teams had elected not to take part which is understandable after a grueling weekend. With no Tilley Moyle took an easy win from Tweedie (Tom knowing he couldn't match the speed of the Camaro consolidated and took a comfortable second in the mini) then Parry, Nokes, Bedwell still showing speed, Collett, Paul Battersby, Peterson, Ferguson, and Stevenson, Les Walmsley then John Harrison and that's the to twelve.
